Hi,

Well it seems that i'm loosing 1 quart every 40 miles. I thought it might be a leak in the oil pan but i don't loose any when the boat just sits there for weeks. I see oil in the bilage area all the time. The engine runs ok so I don't think it's loosing compression.

Question: Where can an engine loose its oil when running?

SPECS: 318 inboard

Thanks,
Lou

can't believe nobody has replied. internal:valve guides/seals,rings,and through crank vents. external: pan gasket, crank seal, damper seal, and head, pan, valve cover, intake manifold gaskets. if there is an oil cooler could be leaking internally, hoses and filter. there are more i'm sure. good luck.

OK, Maybe that was a stupid quetstion.
Let me ask it another way:
How do I go about finding an oil leak? Is there any tips & tricks? ie; such as dyes?

Thanks,
Lou

louny,

Easy.

Get some, black light sensitive, oil dye from an auto parts store. Put it in the engine. Run it.

Get a cheap black light and look around. You'll find it.

If I had to guess, I would say that you have a stopped up PCV or spark arrestor (air cleaner).

Also ,you can do a visual of your engine and components at rest.If you see oil anywhere clean it.An oil covered piece of equipment is virtually imposible to locate all of the potential leaks.1 quart in 40 miles if the engine isn't using oil is a fairly large leak.

You'll Never find the oil leak looking at your computer....
If the motor Is Leaking, There'll be an oil trail.....When you find it, Look Up... Keep looking higher till there's No more oil.... Oil drips Down so the leak will be somewhere in-between.... A boat doesn't have a Fan, So the oil leak will be straight Down,+ is reasonably Easy to find, You just have to Look...
Ya, I know... You can't see in there..... That's Why it Costs so much for a Mechanic to look at it... 'Cause It's not Easy...

That's why I like the black light. Use a mirror on a stick to look in the hard to reach places. The light will penetrate OK, or set it in the bilge.
