Loosing thrust and engine races

I have an 85 hp Evinrude aprox a 1976 model. It was taken off a boat that had been stored outside for a couple years. After a quickie tune up it started right up and has run great for several months. The other day with my son and a friend of mine on board we were leaving the boat ramp and noticed that when going at low speeds the engine seemed okay but when you give it more throttle at a certain point it sounds like the engine slips out of gear and starts racing but there is no thrust from the prop. If you pull back on the throttle it will starting getting some thrust and the boat will start moving again. Anyone have any ideas?

In my opinion i think it would be the propeller. Your prop hub is most likely shot..When they go, they get just enough grip to get you home. Not to race home.Have it checked out and get some other ideas from here

Ayuh,... Hopefully a new prop will Fix it,...
Otherwise, either the lower unit is shot, or the crankshaft splines are Stripped...
