Losing Fuel Line Prime

1986 Evinrude 140.

Been fighting a bogging problem for a long time. Carbs are spotless (been removed and cleaned numerous times), carb kits installed, carb side plates checked, new fuel pump, new fuel lines and clamps.

Replaced the stock intermediate jets (air bleeds) with smaller ones and this helped, but did not eliminate the bog.

I did discover that the bog was almost entirely gone if I pumped up the fuel bulb and immediately took off. Once I returned to idle or stopped the engine for any period of time, the bog would return until I pumped up the bulb again. I assume that I've either got a air leak in the fuel line or a bad bulb. I guess I'll go get another bulb and recheck all the clamps for the umpteenth time and see if that changes anything.

Anybody got any other thoughts about what would cause me to lose the prime? I assume my problem must be between the bulb and the carbs for me to lose the prime.....correct?

Thanks all.

I had the exact same symptoms you are having. I thought that it was a fuel problem as well. After months of frustration determined it was the power pack. Have you ever had yours replaced? Just a thought considering what you have already replaced.

I guess the primer bulb would be the most inexpensive to replace. If that doesn't work check that power pack.

If it's not getting fuel the problem isn't limited from the area between the primer bulb and the carb. It could be anywhere betwen the fuel tank and carb including the fuel tank vent and pick up. Also don't overlook the possibility that the new fuel pump you bought might have a problem.

Re: Losing Fuel Line Prime

Thanks guys.

dupree...new power pack and coils last year. Spark is good on all four cylinders.

lorin...after reading your post I think maybe I'll try using a remote tank of gas to see if the problem persists. If it does I can at least rule out problems with the tank and lines up to the bulb.

Cheers.
