I have a 1971 penn yan with a 302 merc. put new gauges in it. Now every time I give it gas I lose volts I can watch the meter go from about 12 to 0 every time I give it gas ?

Re: Losing volts

You have to get yourself a hand-held digital volt/ohm meter. Measure voltage at the battery for your true reading. My best guess, you wired it wrong or have a bad connection.

Re: Losing volts

Or the gauge and tank unit dont match. Some tank units have the reverse winding of the coil so it must match the head unit.

Regards

Peter

Re: Losing volts

Brian, Peter is referring to the fuel gauge/fuel sender. Could you tell us what gauges you replaced, specifics please.

Aldo

Re: Losing volts

5.7Lomc_bayliner,

When I first read Brians' post I took it to mean that "give it gas" meant filling the tank, Peter probably thought the same.
Brian said in his first post "put new gauges in". Peters' reply assumed that included the fuel gauge - a fair assumption.

Brian, I agree with KaGee, wiring is screwed up somehow. Use a digital volt meter to test your connections including any earth connections.

Aldo
