I have a 2001, 5.7l mercruiser bravo outdrive, completely tuned up plugs wires cap rotor also had the throttle body rebuilt. Runs wonderful at idle once in gear it will only turn up 2000 rpm ocassionally making a pop or knocking sound. Anyone have any idea or suggestions regarding this issue?

a couple plug wires maybe out of order, switched. Try to make sure they are not touching each other as much as possible. was the distributer taken out for any reason? Maybe not reinstalled properly

The distributer was never removed and I just today made sure all wires were in proper firing order as well as tried advancing the timing. Didnt help.

What years the motor?
You might be getting fouled gas. Sounds like what I'm trying to fix. Ethynol destroyed my gas system and hasn't been right since. Check all your gas lines and filters. OR maybe you thru a valve spring. Does it sound ruff while at idle? can you rev it up in neutral? Maybe you got a bad plug. I know that to happen.
Only my suggestions

Vacuum leak? Fuel pressure? Throttle body meaning TBI system? Not carb? Year? If computer controlled, bring it to the dealer. Haven't seen a drivability problem fixed by a DIYer and the internet yet. Just as long as all that was said was done correctly.

checked for vacuum leaks checked out fine no leaks. fuel pressure also checked out fine it is in fact TBI NOT CARB! its a 2001. ONE MORE THING I HAPPEN TO THINK OF WAS THAT WHEN THIS LOOS OF POWER OCCURED WAS RITE AFTER THE STEERING COOLER BROKE IT WAS PLASTIC NEVER SEEN 1 LIKE THAT BEFORE I REPLACED IT WITH THE TYPICAL METAL COPPER FOUND ON MOST ENGINES SO ANYWAY I WAS TOWED IN DUE TO TAKING ON WATER FROM THE COOLER SNAPPING PRACTICALLY IN HALF. AS MENTIONED I REPLACED THE STEERING COOLER WENT OUT FOR A STROLL THATS WHEN IT WOULD BARELY TURN 2000RPM @ WOT. THAT COOLER IS LOCATED RITE BEHIND THE DISTRIBUTER ONLY 2 INCHES AWAY THOUGH IVE REPLACED THE CAP AND ROTOR WITH NO IMPROVEMENT IS IT POSSIBLE THAT PRESSURISED WATER ERUPTING FROM THAT BROKEN S COOLER COULD HAVE DAMAGED THE DISTRIBUTER ITSELF? ANYTHING?
