I have a 92 DT 115 Suzuki with a 19" prop pushing a 22' wood dory. Motor was in storage 3 years-cleaned carbs, new plugs, cleaned oil lines, started right up. Idles great, pulls strong up to 3500 rpm. Over 3500 rpm starts to experience what I can best describe as "ignition breakup" like we used to get in the old hot rods with points in the distributor. Anyway, after 3500 rpm it doesn't really have any more power, max rpm seems to be around 3800, but as soon as I pull throttle back to 3500 rpm it is smooth ans strong again.Any ideas? I am almost positive I should go to a 17" or even a 15" prop, but I don't see how this would cause engine to "break up".

Re: loss of power

can say for certain about your particular engine, but the v6's have several alarms/safeties that will prevent the engine from going over 3500 rpm if it senses a problem. if this occurs there is usually a warning buzzer that goes along with the rpm limit.

check to see if there is a buzzer and that it is working (easy to disconnect).

first thing i would check is the oil flow sensor. this is apparently very sensative and with an engine stored for some time it might be a good idea to clean the screen. when reassembling, make sure the unit is installed in the appropriate direction for the oil flow! good idea to start with new oil too. make sure you purge the oil lines after reassembling.

be a good idea to run premix until oil flow is reestablished to all carb throats.
