Lost forward gear

Good afternoon

i have a 94 Mercruiser 4.3L with an Alpha One Gen 2 drive. We put the boat into the water and it worked the first time out. Second time out it lost forward gear coming in to the dock. Pulled the boat and am doing the troubleshooting. I have followed the directions on adjusting the lower shift cable having gone 3 turns both forward and back with it now back in the original position. I can hear the drive gear on the shaft in the lower unit. I do not believe that there is an issue with the shaft/gears as the boat still has reverse. I am scratching my head on this one and would appreciate any help.

Disconnect the shift cable at the shift plate. Move the cable by hand and verify the prop locks in forward and reverse. If it does, you probably need a lower shift cable
