Lost forward?

1993 Mariner 150 Mag III with hotfoot
Going down the lake yesterday at about 3000rpm. All of a sudden a pop was heard and then the motor reved as I lost forward power.
Shifter moved easily back to neutral. Didn't want to go into reverse so I didn't force it.
After I got home we took the linkage loose and it would shift into reverse and lock up. It would shift into forward but would not lock in. Played with it a little and got it to lock in forward once but never again.
It will always go into reverse and neutral.

What do I look at first or just take it to the shop?

FYI,
Took it to the shop.
They pulled the prop and took the shaft out of the bottom.
Tooth broke off forward gear.
Found out this is the smaller bullet size and they said don't bother trying to rebuild it, look for a larger one to replace it.
Oh well.

The small XR gearcases and hotfoots dont mix well unless in a light boat or racing application.....
