Lost most if not all oil in bilge.... Help! Pulled up to mooring in Avalon, went to switch off batteries and as soon as lifted up engine hatch my heart sunk. I had good pressure, hadn't overheated, now I lost most if not all of my oil! Where do I start? I can't find where it's coming from. Having a mechanic come look at it but I figured I start this thread anyways...

Back around 2003 Volvo had issues with the hoses to the remote oil filter. The crimp ends would come loose and all the oil would spray around the engine compartment. I had this happen in my third season with that boat. It was just out of warranty but Volvo covered the repair because it was a known issue. They replaced the hoses with regular hose clamps. The defective crimp ends are not serviceable and Volvo has since stopped using them as far as I know.

Volvo I/o 305, mechanic knows less than me. No hole in oil filter, can't find hole in oil pan, can't find where it's coming from.

Volvo I/o 305,

Ayuh,.... So is this 5.0l motor a 1978, or a 2015,..??

Has it lived in sweetwater, or brine,..??

Full it up, clean the bilge, then fire motor back up. Oil leaks easy to find, just follow the stream of oil

make sure your filter is tight! It doesn't need to have a hole in it to leak..

If the boat was just serviced, did the old gasket from the old oil filter get stuck to the block and now there are two gaskets?

Been there done that... sometimes the engine idling won't be enough to make it leak with the double gasket but when you give it rpms.... look out. If pressure was fine I wouldn't worry too much. A little oil makes a big mess and probably looks like a gallon!

I've been trying to post pics but it says my file is to big? Anyway, I've found where the oil is coming from, it's out of a hole that's threaded? It almost looks like a bolt should be there, yes I've looked for the bolt/plug in the bilge to no avail. I've thought about plugging the hole with said the add bolt, but than thought against it. I'm stuck in Catalina but there are worse place s to be stuck. Thanks for the replay and I will keep posting for future references once I figure out what's going on

Threaded hole would be an oil pressure sensor? Look for a dangling wire with the sensor attached near the hole. Is it on the block back by the oil filter?

Look for something like this.... not sure of your model number or year. Mine has 2... one is an oil pressure sensor for the gauge. The other is an oil pressure switch. Some have one wire coming out of them and some have 2. Again... just look for 1 or 2 wires hanging near the hole with something like this hanging near it... not sure why this would come unscrewed though unless it was just replaced?

I read this post yesterday morning, and thought to myself that I had done hundreds of oil changes, and I've been lucky that I have never seen this before.

Yesterday afternoon, I changed my filter. As I was spinning the new one on, I happened to look at the old one sitting bottom up on the deck and noticed the seal was gone. I spun the new filter off and removed the old gasket. I thought of your post immediately. Funny how things like that happen. Now its happened to me... Almost.

I've been changing my own oil in all of my vehicles for over 25 years -the above only happened to me once. After the oil change I was about to get on the interstate for a 3 hour drive. Luckily I stopped for gas before getting on the on ramp and noticed oil all down the side of my truck.

So apparently that top hole has/had a plug in it when casted, from the inside. The plug is made to disinigrate when it comes out.... I'm not sure the technical names as I'm a cadet, but all I did was plug with a 3/8 bolt, silicone and a fender washer. Went to take for a test run but am now hearing a "popping" sound from the air filter area... Agh
