lost oil pressure? (5.0L omc '85)

(sorry- long post!)

1985 Bayliner with 225 hp OMC outdrive (800 Stringer w/ 5.0L v8-305 chev). Recently acquired this boat, which was represented as having approximately 200 hours. I think the actual hours may be a little bit more than that, but I have no reason to believe they are not in the ballpark. I have run the boat a few times and it performed flawlessly with oil pressure between 20-50 psi.

On my most recent outing, I had not run more than 30 minutes, when I noticed the oil pressure had dropped to zero. I’m not sure how long I ran it like that before noticing, but do know that the oil pressure looked good when I first started out. I shut the engine down, and checked the oil level- good. I re-started it, and listened for lifter noise or bearing knock- nothing. Suspecting maybe a bad gauge, sending unit, or connection, I revved the engine a bit to see if the needle would move. The needle rose ever so slightly, but still less than 5 psi. I looked under each valve cover (through the oil fill openings) to see if I could tell if there was proper oiling, but due to my lack of experience was unable to make a conclusion. (There did seem to be some oil flow, though.) The engine temp was normal. Still suspecting a problem with the gauge, sending unit, or wiring, but not wanting to really screw things up if wrong, I slowly idled back to the dock and trailered up.

I assume the next logical step would be to hook up a mechanical gauge to determine the true pressure, but as I have not yet had time to do that, I thought I would fish this forum for possible scenarios. Anyone care to float a theory for what is going on here? I am hoping like a fool that it is something simple (sending unit, etc…), but the fact that the needle does register a pressure increase (albeit small) with RPM increase, has me worried about the graver possibilities.

Thanks!

Disconnect the wire at the sending unit and ground it, key on of course.. The guage should go to full tilt. If it does, you've narrowed it down to the sending unit or the oil pump. I'll vote for the sending unit. I'm not sure how to test a sending unit short of trying a new one.

liner85:
I have worked on small blocks, since the 283 was introduced, and you definitely have a guage or sending unit problem. With no oil circulating under load, the engine would have locked up in minutes. You said you idled back to the dock.
Go with Boomyal post, bad guage, or sending unit on the engine.

I gotta agree. with no oil pressure your lifters would have been chattering like a bunch of marbles in a washing machine.
test the gauge and if it tests good try a sender.

Thanks everyone for your replies. This is just what I was hoping to hear. Thanks Boomyal- I did not know how to test the gauge. I will test it tonight per your instructions, and go from there. If the sending unit is to blame, will a run-of-the-mill unit from an automotive store do the job, or do I need to buy a marine-specific unit? Thanks again!

One from an auto parts store will work. When installing it,Do Not use teflon tape. The sending unit has to make a direct ground with the block(engine) to give you the right reading.
One thing I whated to know, what was your temp gauge reading at the time?

Thanks for the tip.

As for the temp it stayed level at around 160.

Ok, I have more questions if you all don't mind...
I tested the gauge per boomyal's instruction, and it tested good. So I went and bought a cheap ($11) automotive sending unit (for an '85 chevy w/ 305). I installed it, but now with the key on, engine off, the gauge now shows maximum oil pressure (80+ psi). With the engine on, the gauge pressure drops a bit. It is as if the sending unit is operating backwards, if that makes sense. It seems the automotive sending unit is not the right one, or have I done something incorrectly? Do I need a specific sending unit for the 'US Marine' gauge that is in the boat? My local shop claims they have the correct sending unit for $40, but I wanted to make sure I am going down the right path before making the purchase. (If you can't tell already, I am a low budget boater, if there is such a thing:))

A sending unit is nothing but, for lack of better word, a ground based potentiometer. I would think that if it registered 80 psi with no pressure from the engine, it is defective. I'd take it back and talk to the auto parts store. Be sure to tell them the guage checks ok. There is no difference between marine and auto.
