My Dad just called me from our houseboat and told me he was tieing up to shore had the engine idleing when it just up and died. Lost all spark to all 4 cylinders. The engine is a 70's model v4 evinrude. Any help you'all could give me would be great. He's about 10 miles out and I'd love to fix it without calling on lake Powells mechanics. (They are pricey.)

What year is it exactly? Could be ignition switch, lanyard switch, power pack(s).... what v4 is it? Get a model # off the transom clamp.

70's model V4, leaves alot open. Can you supply a model number, it would give us the year, and then we would know exactly what engine we were working on.

I will get the model # when He calls back. May take a couple days he doesn't have phone service where he's parked and he's on vacation.

Thanks, this looks like the info we need. I'll have him do the disconnect test and if that doesn't work I'll pick up a stator and go to the lake this weekend. Hopefully we won't have to change it though. If you can do the disconnect tests and get spark would it be o.k. to run it like that back to the marina?

Re: Lost spark while idleing

I'm having trouble figuring out the colored wires. But I did check the resistance of the brown to brown/yellow wires. The peramiters are 450 - 550 ohms i'm reading 301 and 302 from each side. I'm not sure what DVA is or how to check it can you tell me some more or is the reading i've got enough to tell that the stator is the problem

I tested what I think are the right wires coming from the timing base and have 31-33 readings

Alright I figured out how to do the dva test. I've got 88 vac and 110 vac readings from the stator coils. Quite low. I tried reading the timing base but only read .06 i'm not sure if i got the right wires or if the low stator voltage has thrown that off.

Any Ideas on where to go from here.

Got Spark... Turns out the stator was out of specs. Changed it out with a CDI Stator. I didn't get any spark right away which was strange but come morning I had spark.(think the battery may have been to low to spin the motor fast enough.)

Thanks for your help
