Re: Lots of hunters here...

In Wisconsin, as others posted, have to wear BO (Blaze Orange). Is real good and safe imo.

At my shak we also wear BO towards end of season--and we are seasoned 'cause we have no wash facilities other than a truck stop shower available for five bucks in the vacinity (good eats too)(and they have beer).

IMO, due to the population of hunters in the Wisconsin the BO requirement is important. Long gone are the days of extended still hunts or drives over a section of woods or land ( a section is one mile square=640acres).

Now we have smaller tracts, 40, 80 120-and so on acres of private owned land that folks go out and sit on (I do)--thus the importance of the regulation that mandates we wear BO to at least signal presence of ourselves under ideal situations.

Safe hunts to all--

No orange required yet but I've heard that it will be required next year.

Re: Lots of hunters here...

Orange is the law here. I was first upset about it, but did some investigating. Deer are PARTIALLY color blind. The red/yellow side of the spectrum looks grayish to them. The blue, however, they can see very well. So don't wear blue jeans when hunting, the deer will see you (I have done some "home" experiments with this and it does seem to play out that I get spotted quicker in blue jeans than in blaze orange!).

Antlers, as has been said, is part age, part heredity, and part nutrition. A deer will shed its antlers about the same time each year (many times to the exact day). Injuries to the deer will also effect antler growth. I shot a huge spike (on one side) one year. The other side had a 3 inch spike with what looked like a can opener on the end. When skinning the der out we learned the deers back had been broken a year or more ago. Possibly hit by a car. He ran and moved fine, but its ribs were twisted and the backbone in a knot! It was obvious the injury effected the antler growth.

As far as doe with antlers, they have a hormone imbalance that is the reason that it happens to a few every year. A couple year ago we had an albino 4 point doe in the area.
