Hello I have a 1990 4.3 omc chevy with a 2bbl holley. After a recent rebuild of the motor, I had to fight it to get it started. The machine shop took the complete motor, oil pan to rocker covers, harmonic balancer to coupler and returned it fully assembled. It kept backfiring while cranking. I put it on compression stroke on cylinder 1 when installing distributor. The manual says #1 should be on the front of the dist. I havent changed any of the locations of the wires and my #1 is on the back. It would not even try to fire with me putting #1 in the front.neways I got it to run (kind of rough) so I changed fuel filter, cleaned pickup screen(it was dirty), and replaced anti-siphon valve. It cleared up on the muffs so I took it to the lake. It would only get to 1500 rpm(WOT). I pumped out the fuel 1 month ago when I bought the boat(fuel is fresh, but who knows how clean the tank is). I thought maybe it was 180 out on the timing. I took the #1 plug out and turned the motor over by hand to get on the compression stroke and lined up with tdc. I took the dist off then and the rotor was 90 degrees off of the back. what are the odds my new timing chain slipped a tooth? or maybe I need a carb rebuild? is there any test that would tell me if the carb needs rebuilt? It ran great for about 1 hour before I noticed water in the oil 2 weeks ago. Hopefully I said something here that someone could make sense of. I am frustrated with this. Thanks in advance
