Hello I have a 1990 4.3 omc chevy with a 2bbl holley. After a recent rebuild of the motor, I had to fight it to get it started. The machine shop took the complete motor, oil pan to rocker covers, harmonic balancer to coupler and returned it fully assembled. It kept backfiring while cranking. I put it on compression stroke on cylinder 1 when installing distributor. The manual says #1 should be on the front of the dist. I havent changed any of the locations of the wires and my #1 is on the back. It would not even try to fire with me putting #1 in the front.neways I got it to run (kind of rough) so I changed fuel filter, cleaned pickup screen(it was dirty), and replaced anti-siphon valve. It cleared up on the muffs so I took it to the lake. It would only get to 1500 rpm(WOT). I pumped out the fuel 1 month ago when I bought the boat(fuel is fresh, but who knows how clean the tank is). I thought maybe it was 180 out on the timing. I took the #1 plug out and turned the motor over by hand to get on the compression stroke and lined up with tdc. I took the dist off then and the rotor was 90 degrees off of the back. what are the odds my new timing chain slipped a tooth? or maybe I need a carb rebuild? is there any test that would tell me if the carb needs rebuilt? It ran great for about 1 hour before I noticed water in the oil 2 weeks ago. Hopefully I said something here that someone could make sense of. I am frustrated with this. Thanks in advance

Gotta ask 1 question, did you solve the problem that caused water in oil before you put it back in the water?

Re: lots of problems or just one?

#1 plug wire usually goes to the pin marked #1 on the cap, USUALLY
Depends on who timed the engine and where he decided to put #1
pull the valve cover, rotate motor untill #1 intake opens and closes, turn motor untill timing mark is lined up on "0".This is #1 compression stroke.Look at the dist cap to see where #1 is,turn rotor to this point and drop dist in,fully seated rotor should be pointing to #1 position on the cap. You may have to turn the oil pump shaft slightly to get everytrhing lined up.Install plug wires in the correct order, and retest and post results.

Re: lots of problems or just one?

sorry for the long delay replying. I did what you said and retimed the engine. That thing fired right up:D:D however I have accumulated a new prob that I am going to post a new thread. Oh yeah $1700 later did fix my water in oil problem. I found a great machine shop that allowed me to take the entire engine to them completely assembled(harmonic balancer to coupler, and intake and rocker covers to oil pan) and in 5 days he was calling me to tell me it is done:eek: so thanks for your reply and advice.
