Loud engine noise

I have a 1993 Maxum 23 SC with a Mercruiser 4.3 alpha 1 stern drive.
Twice when boating a loud engine noise(Sounds like an obnoxious air horn...but isn't the horn) sounded when pushing the boat to around 4000-4500 rpms.

I can only stop the sound by turning the engine off and waiting around 15-20 minutes to restart the engine.

When the sound discharges the Temp, voltage, oil pressure gauges all read normal...I have checked the engine oil, steering fluid, and fuel which were also normal.

This noise does not come on when I am under 4000 rpm(approx.). The owners manual says that this sound is a warning sign for one of the "engine sub-systems"

What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Loud engine noise

you havent mentioned the DRIVE OIL.

Your boat should have a monitor bottle on the engine. The sound will go off if the drive oil is too low and it may just be a bit low then when you run it at high RPM is sucks some lube down past the sensor in the bottle.
The horn monitors the drive lube as well and you didnt mention it and there is no gauge on the dash for it so take a look and check it out.
