I have a 2000 Larson SEI 226 with a Volvo Penta 5.7 I/O. I am getting this weird shreaking or chattering sound when I crank the steering wheel hard when up at speed or when taking off and turning the wheel. I was thinking this might be the belts? I asked the guys at the shop to check this out, but out of all the work they did they forgot to look into this and couldn't answer my question unless I bring it back in. It has happened for a while now and the boat has had several 100 hr services since it started.

It does not seem to be a major problem... more of an annoyance. What do you suppose this is and is it an easy fix?

Re: loud sqweeky belts

I just tightened up my belts on mine...and sanded the inside of the pulleys as they were all rusted and probably caused the belts to slip in the first place.

If the belt has a shine on it,that means it is ready for replacement.Make sure the pulleys are clean and rust free as Cobra stated and make sure the belt is tight.Check the p/s fluid level.Charlie

thanks for the replies... I'll check that. I was out today and have a friend who thinks maybe it might be a bearing going bad in one of the pumps.

A simple and effective way to check if a bearing is the noise, for example an alternator....Take a broom stick and put one end on the alternator and put the other end in your ear.You will hear in a second if thats where the noise is coming from.Sounds stupid but it works great!!!!! Charlie

Just take a spay bottle anf fill it with water and spray the pully or belt in question while it is making noise, If it is a belt, it will stop squeeling momentarily. Dont spray it with anything else.
