I've posted my embarassing episode of forgeting the plug(on the other forum) I'm a newbie, and I hope I didn't mess up my pride & joy,('88 Four Winns 160, W/3L GM OMC I/O). Long story short; water about 1/3-1/2 up the block,Motored back with the pump going(just 3-4 min. to shore) motor was luging but running ok. Dried & WD'd everything charged batt. started right up W/ muffs, there was some water in the oil, changed it. Had it out, ran ok, seemed a little less power, and the exaust seemed a little louder... What did I DO?

First trip out after buying my first boat this year. No experience did exact same thing except motor died, boat about half full of water and a paddle in my hand. Seems to work thru it after a couple of times out. Hope this makes you feel better.

Besides water in the oil and the horrible running engine for awhile which i later discovered was the distributor which was soaked. Nothing was damaged. That has appeared yet. Been out 4 times since and everything was running fine until this weekend, but that is just my lower shift cable.

Sounds like you just need to bake it out with some prolonged running at moderate speed. As dumbnut says, liquid water can easily get into distributor, but will take forever for water vapor to get out. Pop the cap off and dry it out.

Possible, not probable, you could have cracked part of exhaust system with cold water. Is it louder outside boat around transom or in engine compartment? Like I said, not probable, but if it's inside you have a potential carbon monoxide problem.

Mr peepers thanks for getting back, dried the dist. right away. The noise is more inside, but sort of sounds like the exaust is got more back pressure. Also, is the exaust supposed to come out all around the outdrive? I only had the boat out once before (the dunking) so this could be my imagination (based on guilt!)

Gary:

Sounds like you might have damaged the exhaust bellows. I damaged mine, and I can tell you that the exhaust bubbling and churning around the transom is quite noticeable with the boat in the water in neutral. When I start mine on my boatlift the drive is not fully submerged and it is quite noisy (I have a v8). It's not so bad when running. I'm using the boat now and will replace the bellows this winter.

When you had your incident did you put a line or sling somewhere where you could have snagged the bellows?

I'd say if it runs ok and you don't see smoke, go ahead and drive it. Getting the engine nice and warm is the best thing for it now. I'd also suggest changing the oil and filter again, especially if you pumped the oil out rather than draining it.

Don't feel bad. I broke (not bent) a prop my first time out. I know several pilots who have landed with wheels up. We're all human.
