i hear ya ,brother...<br /><br />reason for the 'paper' is to eat it.. 3 sheets a day.. but make sure you scrape off any excess print before you do..<br /><br />print = way to many extra carbs & calories..<br /><br />for a change of pace try unlined yellow paper.. but it's alittle strong at first.. but easier on the palate..

Re: Low Carb diet.. Who is on one???

I tried one and so far so good.It really does work for me,mostly because I am a meat eater. The hard part for me was breaking the nasty habit of eating cookies and chocolat all the time.My wife filled the cookie jar with carrots!I found that eating has to do with your entire daily routine. When I changed my routine and deleted the munchies triggering habits it became easier. If you do it as a diet without trying to change your life style then you are just torturing yourself and it is a waste of time.

I gave up on diets a long time ago. I try not to eat too much garbage, but sometimes it just happens. I just get on the mountain bike and put more mileage under the wheels and it gets the job done. I do tend to eat a bit too much breads and cheese, but I eat very little red meat or pork. I stick to poultry and fish mainly. They say if it doesn't run, fly, or swim, don't eat it...

Some of the people I work with are on it. The only downside is something having to do with your bowels. No, I won't go there, just mentioning it. So, don't be surprised.<br />

Best thing to do is get on South Beach, do a lot of veggies lightly steamed<br /><br />Be creative! Cauliflower and turnips are both wonderful steamed til mushy, (no light steam here) a little fat free half and half and some butter spray, pepper and garlic, mash or whip til you have mashed taters, tastes a LOT like mashed taters too!<br /><br />do a search for low carb forum and youll find low carb friends, active low carber, lots of them<br /><br />Bread machines are your friend too, take a little trip by clicking here and find some truly good recipes<br /><br />you dont want to go too high on the glycemic index, and you definitely want to cross link carbs with protein. Try to stay away from those evil taters, white bread, white rice, anything minus its hull is pretty bad for you<br /><br />all protein is bad for you, your brain runs on carbs ultimately and you need em, you just dont need a diet of ALL carbs, which is what the buzz was in the eighties<br /><br />here is a recipe for bread youll like<br /><br />1.5 c tepid water<br />1 c Vital Wheat Gluten<br />1 c Flax Meal<br />3/4 c Barley Flour<br />pkg fast rise yeast<br />couple of cranks of fresh ground pepper - call it 1 t (but my grinder was set for coarse and it CRANKS, but as you like it)<br />same amount of garlic, same considerations, I used T, you can use t<br />1.5 t caraway seeds - those of you longing for rye bread, this gives it a savory kick in that direction!.<br /><br />I set my machine for dough, and let it do its thing. This made four hot dog rolls and four hamburger bun sized rolls, then I brushed them with a beaten egg and put more black pepper and garlic on top <br /><br />40 mins at 350, and they were great, and low carb to boot, Crunch the crust, chew the inside, like a bagel only without 70 carbs<br /><br />Get some beano though, going to a vegan-esque diet takes your body a while to get used to!

I've been on a low carb diet more than once. They work for a while. I've lost 30 lbs. The problem is without carbs your body begins to go into a carb starvation mode and you begin to crave breads and cereals like crazy.

Low carb sucks.<br /><br />Just get off the butt cushion and do something. The busier you are, the less time you have to eat.<br /><br />I dated a girl that was on a low carb diet, and only ate about 6 ounces of food a day, literally. She was still fat, but she saved lots of money on TP, cause she only went every 3rd day. This relationship only lasted about 2 weeks.

South Beach is NOT low carb, its the RIGHT carbs, and the low carb forums also have sections for South Beach. Its easy and it works - the wife and kids like it too

Fishhunter, Get a book called Sugerbusters, My doc put me on it's a low carb/right carbs, low fat diet book. Was put on for the same reason as you. Did great lost 20 lbs. Then the Holidays hit and the brutal weather, so the exercising has stopped a bit. Give it a look up.<br /><br />Biggest problem is it's a big lifestyle change and the garbage that is sold in the grocery stores makes it that much harder. You would not believe how hard it is to find stuf that is 1. low in sugar. and 2. does not have processed flour.<br /><br />But get the book it will help a lot and explain the whole carb deal.

If you go on a low carb diet you should do it with your doctors supervision. Blood sugar can drop so low that you could have seizures. I was on the original Dr Adkins in the late seventies and became hypo glucemic (sp?). I was with a paramedic looking for a lost hunter in northern minnesota and I just lost it. Heart rate shot up could not catch my breath and could not walk without getting light headed. He gave me some orange juice and some sugar and I came right out of it. Also the low carb thing is for rapid weight loss and should not be maintained for very long. Then you need moderation on what you eat and excercise

Re: Low Carb diet.. Who is on one???

fishhunter911,<br />I had a similar problem. My total cholesteral was ok, but my HDL was too low. My doctor suggested dropping all simple carbs (sweets etc), complex carbs (whole wheat bread etc) were okay. I did that for a week and HDL almost doubled.

Re: Low Carb diet.. Who is on one???

Thanks jg. I will get the book. The lifestyle change has sucked, but I am getting thru it ok. Had my sister come over and go shopping in our pantry, she took all the bad stuff. One good thing is my wife is doing this with me so that helps alot. Again thanks all for the advise

Re: Low Carb diet.. Who is on one???

If you get the book you will like the stuff they tell you. It really is a lifestyle change though. I love baked potatoes with oddles of sour cream and butter and chives. But one potatoe is like eating a cup of suger straight up. Yuk! It instantaly metoblizes as suger in the belly. <br /><br />So now we substitute bake yams. Still good. The diet allows you to skip everynow and then after you have everything undercontrol but I think you will find that once you make the life style change it's easy to stay on track.<br /><br />Like I said before it's the grocery store you will have the most problem. It took us awhile before we began to find items with whole grains or not enriched flour but give it a chance Ithink you can make it with out a problem. Just be prepared to be frustrated the first few grocery trips.
