Greetings all. I was just given my grandfather's old 1967 15ft. Duo 3v5 fiberglass boat, and along with it a 1983 Johnson 60hp. I've restored the boat to working conditions (replaced the old rotted out transom and reglassed), now it's time to work on the engine.
My Grandpa kept the motor in immaculate condition. I replaced the plugs, drained the old lower unit oll and replaced it with new, checked the fuel filter and then started her up. She started right up and idled very well after only a few minutes.
The problem is, when I shift it into forward gear it just doesn't seem to have nearly as much power as it should. There is a very strong and constant stream of water coming out of the engine so I think the water pump is fine(though I am planning on replacing the impeller next week when it comes in).
This motor hasn't been run in 11 years. I am a new boater on an extremely tight budget and would like to do the work myslef if at all possible (I bought a manual for the motor, but am looking for some additional advice before tearing into this thing.) Any ideas? And better yet, any quick fixes so I can get out on the water ASAP?
The boat ran real slow one day, then she ran significantly better the next, however, on the following day she ran slow again (of course on the two slow days I had an additional heavy-set person in the boat).
Okay, any ideas? Anyone?
