I am in the planning stages of building a new boat. I would like the vessel to be powered by twin inboard diesel engines. Is there a manufacturer of a low profile (possibly horizontally opposed) 65 to 90 hp engine. Most makes I have researched are between 26 and 30 inches in height,I would prefer a lower profile to assist with maimising deck space.

Re: Low profile diesel engines

Search for US Air Force 463L equipment, or aircraft cargo loaders. The early 25K and 40K loaders had a gas engine laid on its side. These were later converted to diesel. The 25K had a small 6 cylinder, laid on its side. I think these were standard engines with only a change in the oiling system. The next time Im at Panama City, I will try for a tour of the shop there that works on this equipment and take a look at the engines.

You could ask C17loadsmasher, he is a loadmaster on the C17s, he might peek at the engine while loading the aircraft.
