Low RPM issues

Hello, I have been having issues over the past week with the 1987 Suntracker 24' Pontoon boat. It has a 90hp Johnson 2 Stroke engine around the same age. If I run the choke off the bat and put the accelerator up it runs fine but as soon as I slowly bring it down to the lower rpm or idle it just slowly trickles off. Originally this started when I put 87 Ethanol gas in not knowing from the previous owner it was to be 93 premium with no ethanol and 2 stroke oil to go along with it. It was shutting off when I had that gas in there. I have however been able to slam the accelerator down then pull the gas up and it run's fine till I bring it close to idle. So far I have completely changed out the battery and re did the grounds. I inspected the wiring to make sure everything is corrected properly. Today I changed the spark plugs as a last resort, along with burning out the gas and now running it on what it is supposed to be. Any help is much appreciated, as prior to putting this gas through the boat had run fine, so it is worrying but I am hoping there is a simple fix.

Did you run it with the 87 Ethanol gas and no oil? BTW, no need for premium gas either.

Yea that's what I did originally which caused these issues, now I put through the premium 93 with the oil and it's running better but shuts off at low rpm.

Running it with no oil - could have scuffed pistons or damaged bearings. How long did it run with no oil? 2-stroke relies on the mixed oil for all lubrication.

Check the compression on each cylinder. If the compression is low, on one or more cyls- you may need to visually inspect each cyl/piston for scuffing or other damage.
