Hello , I have a 1977 6 horse Johnson and have a few questions regarding the slow speed idle adjustment tube that threads into the front upper part of the carburetor.

The nut that goes over top of the adjusting tube is that nut suppose to be snug or should it be a little more then hand tight, and should the shaft be stationary once tightened not being able to turn? With mine if I tighten a little more then hand tight the adjusting tube doesnt want to turn, as if the nut is tightening on the tube....Is this normal to happen? I have been running the motor with the nut only hand tight so that I can adjust it while running but im thinking that maybe there is air getting in there that might be the cause of another problem im having and that is the engine will miss a little here and there during throttling up , around the 3/4 throttle up position I get a miss here and there., but once wide open runs like a top......Pretty much all has been replaced from a carb kit to a new fuel pump and hoses and new spark plugs..The high speed jet is clean so I cant see that being the problem..Could the slow speed idle adjusting tube be possibly sucking air and perhaps causing the engine to miss in the way that I described?

Thanks very much,

regards,

Terry

The nut should be snug, there is a packing gland inside that compresses around the screw's shank it also makes an airtight seal, the adjusting screw should be tight enough enough that it doesn't vibrate out of adjustment yet loose enough that it can be easily turned, sounds like your packing is gone.

Hi there , thank you for your early response...I wasnt aware that there is a gland that goes behind the nut, is that in relation to the washers that go onto the shaft? I recently ordered the washers 2 plastic and 2 cork for it but not knowing about a gland , is that a washer or part of the washer assy that I have ordered?

I just emailed the supplier, after looking at some photos of what a packing gland is you are correct to say im missing that for sure...All that was there when I inspected it was one plastic washer and two very thin gasket like washers..Someone micky moused it thats for sure.

When I said packing gland I was refering to the plastic washers and cork or rubber or teflon whitchever type yours takes.
