Low speed needle shape. possilbly turning new point

I am need of some advive. This low speed needle is from my 1967 9.5 hp Johnson model MQ-13. My original thought was that my motor was running too rich no matter how much i tried to lean it out. The best my motor has ever ran was one time I accidentally ran it out of gas. and the last three seconds before it cut out completely, it sounded strong. I thought then was the optimal fuel/air ratio

All new points, plugs, and condensers. I think timing is fine. Compression is good. Anyway, a carb rebuild kit is being shipped right now with an owners manual.

I have read the linked post but i wanted to double check.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=432163&highlight=low+speed+needle+shape

my two basic questions are:

Could this be letting too much fuel through?

Is there anything I can do about it to re-turn it if need be?
(I have fairly decent connections with a machine shop)

Thank you guys in advance

While you could probably machine it and get it to work correctly, I'd call Tim's outboard 218-682-2331 with the model number of your motor and get a good, used one. They ship quick, and prices are always reasonable. Good luck. Oh, and that fouled needle is likely your main issue, although a sinking/wrongly adjusted float level would cause the same issue and run well when virtually out of fuel..

Two basic answers: yes and yes. Any good machinest can handle this job.

Your needle is definitely damaged/eroded! Not a perfectly flat tip like I and the OP were discussing in the above linked thread. Do it now before you rebuild the carb. Good luck!

Also, get real good look at the jet to make sure it hasn't been damaged also.

Just an idea, maybe chuck that needle in a 3/8" electric drill and re-surface the point against a fine grain flat file or stone...should be easy to do! Good Luck!

Except for one minor detail. That needle is attached to a flex cable about a foot long. That would take a somewhat unusual drill chuck.

What? Man those 9.5's are weird birds. Glad I don't have any! I like the good ole 10's. Bulletproof :)

thank you guys for the replys. I talked with my dad about turning the point back down to a perfect cone, he hasn't seen it yet but I did explain that there was a cable on it. He still thought he could do it. So we'll see and I'll post again after he gets done.

I hope this fixes my bogging problem. I'm just glad I found something wrong with it to try to fix it. I was really beginning to scratch my head on what to do next.

thanks again
Jacob
