Low voltage draw

I just installed a new Dual 200watt the works all the bells and whistles radio in our 2005 Maxum. It sounds great but I have a slight draw on the battery. It takes about a week to go down just enough to need about 5 minutes of charge to be back to 12v. I take the face off every time we bring it in. I took the battery backup off the post to see if this could be where the problem is but no luck. I get a spark when the positive battery cable is touched to the post. It is not shorting anything out and it does not shock me. I get just a small arc, and then it is ok. It is driving me NUTS.

Re: Low voltage draw

A radio can draw a small amount of current to keep its memory functions.

Re: Low voltage draw

Taking the face plate off should be sufficient as that kills the display, the other power for memory only should have minimal affect, did you also install a power amp with this setup or is it just a head unit (deck)? With the face off and the memory wire off there should be zero current draw, could be a defective unit?

Re: Low voltage draw

I have not installed any extra equipment. I have just resolved myself to the fact I will have to charge the battery on Friday. I threw the receipt away. (Smart I know) I checked everything and it must be in the head. <br />Thanks for all your help.

get a cheapies digital multimeter that measures current, take the positive lead off the battery and connect the meter to read amps between the positive terminal and the positive terminal on the battery. You should be able to see what you have discharging the battery if there is current going through the meter and stops if you disconnect the radio, or if it's not the radio, any fuse you pull out.
