Low water pressure and overheat

New topic in addition to my recent overheat problem, still unsolved: Mercury 50 Hp Bigfoot.
We narrowed the problem down to the water pickup line, the one going from the pump up to the powerhead, and right where it connects to the powerhead there seems to be an obstruction, still letting water thru ( it still pees) but not enough.
Either dirt or possible corrosion. Question now is how to get there? I am afraid the only way is to remove the whole powerhead - please tell me I am wrong.
When I feed a thin plastic tube into the water -pickup line it comes to a stop about 1/2 inch below where it goes into the powerhead, and it feels like it is touching a spring loaded valve.
My manual is not very clear about that; in the drawings I see a DEFLECTOR-OIL, BODY ASSY, COTTER PIN, PLUNGER and 2 springs - but it is unclear to me weather those parts are in line with the water tubing.
Thanks for any reply - waterpump, thermostat and all the other coommon parts are definitly ruled out: it is low water pressure.

I don't know the particulars of that engine but many engines have a rubber grommet at the top of the water tube and sometimes they can get pinched or deformed and block off flow. Check an exploded diagram.
