Lowe Angler 150s to plane

I have a 2002 lowe angler 150s with a yamaha 9.9 which I want to upgrade to more hp, but dollars are limited.
this is a relatively heavy aluminum boat at 730 pounds empty. I am wondering if I can get to plane with a yamaha 4-stroke 20hp? Yamaha doesn't make a 25 or a 30 and a 40 will break the bank!
Any ideas, i was trying to stay with Yamaha so I can use the same remote.

We are probably buying a 2nd boat which is a 2001 14 Lowe Sea Nymph side console.

It has a 2001 HP 4 stroke Evinrude on it now. I'm sure we will be dumping that motor and getting a 20 Yammy 4 stroke or a Honda 20.

The Honda is the lightest in it's class. I don't know if you have a tiller or side console, but especially with a tiller, as soon as you add another person or a third I have found these small outboards don't cut it for getting up on plane with much less than the max HP's.

I had just searched for another motor last night and saw a 2004 20 hp 4 stroke Honda with remote, electric and power trim for $2100. It's in CA, so it's too far for me but it does give you the price range as the poster said the book value was around 1900 to 2100.

I'm giving you the range of what you are going to need to spend. If you need to go for a tiller model it will be cheaper. And you can sell your 9.9 on Craigslist or to a buddy.

If your looking for used or new then to save a few bucks I would look for the lower priced Nissan, Tohatsu or similar etc. If money's an issue why pay up for something like a Merc 25 when Tohatsu was making the heads for them anyway?

I know guys with similar heavy boats, many running 9.9s due to NJ laws and a few of them have older 15's disguised as 9.9s They can get the boats on plane most of the time with these 15s and I am sure you will also get yours on plane with a 20 h.p.

well, I did it, a new 2006 Yamaha 25hp TLR. Just so happens the dealer I bought the boat from had a leftover, still crated! It has tilt and trim so it is a little heavier. they also had the same motor in a high thrust but that is close to 180 pounds, more weight to pull.
It was a little more than I wanted to spend but long term it should work out fine. Whether it will plane with a full load is still unknown.

By the way, Expidia, I am jealous of the Lund, tried to find one for a solid year, but was always a little late, but I love the Lowe. We call it the Tug, as in tugboat, but now with the 25 we will have to find a new name.
