Hi, I had to rebuild my lower end due to water and resulting rust freezing up the upper shaft bearing (below the waterpump). After replacing the shaft seal, the driveshaft seal, the oring and the oring on the gearcase I figured I was all set:rolleyes:. However, I have tried putting this thing together several times  with no seal (5 PSI air blows out at the propeller end where the gear case seals to the round disk thingy). I am guessing that you must have to use some sort of sealing compound where the end of the oring goes up against the round disk thingy. Can I use the blue gasket material that NAPA sells, or is something special required? I also have some gasket sealant (the kind that doesn't harden).

I have two big twins in my garage right now that suffer from this same issue and which I have rebuilt both bottom ends, so the learning will be applied to both of them, so double thanks for any advice!:)

I use non-hardening Permatex No.2 and it works fine. Make sure you replace the spaghetti seal also. Did you replace the large o-ring on the prop shaft seal bushing?

Hi, I think the permatex #2 is the same as the NAPA (brown smelly stuff) that I have, so sounds like that will do the trick.

Yes I replaced the 16" spaghetti seal and the large o ring around the disk that the propeller shaft goes through. I also replaced the propeller shaft seal and the main drive shaft seal. The leaks were only seen at the locations that correspond to the ends of the spaghetti seal, so I figured there had to be some sort of sealant that needed to be applied.

Thanks a lot I will see how it works out. Then I will have a nice running 33HP for sale for $150 with rebuilt lower end. :p Need to pay for the non-running 1972 40HP Johnson I bought to go with my "new" 16' 1972 Starcraft Jupiter runabout. I didn't think the 33HP would be up to pushing the extra weight around, although it was a great match to the 1962 14' Starcraft I owned previously.:D
