lower end: new vs refurbished

I posted in the Volvo section several days ago, but didn't get any response, maybe I didn't post correctly. Would like to try again here:

Simply...I have a choice to make after an accident involving my lower unit. Insurance will pay for everything less deductible of $375 but they want to use a refurbished lower unit from Doug Russell out of Florida. If I want to put a new lower unit on from Volvo I will have to pay about $1,100 out of pocket. Refurbished has 1 year warranty, but I'm unfamiliar with the company in Florida as is my marine shop that's doing the repair.

Boat is a 2006 Glastron MX175. Any thoughts on going with refurbished as opposed to new lower unit considering the cost difference? Thanks.

New probably has a 90 day warranty, but remanufactured is always iffy. Personally, I would go with the cheaper one and pray.

Doug Russell seems to have a good reputation down here. That's all I can say.

You should be able to tell if the drive would last in 90 days. Once installed do some regular and hard running with it and check the lube when the drive gets close to 90 days. Just need to work out the install date. I wouldn't have it installed and then put away for the winter.

Thanks, I'm way out in Oregon. Owner of repair center here had never heard of them and, according to him, has had bad luck with refurbished parts so he he raised the red flag with me

That's my dilema in that it's in the shop now for repair to the hull, which suffered a bit of damage from a meeting with what must of been a rock (I hit something good for it to tear up the lower unit like it did...big 2" hole, prop, shaft...gone!).

It's there for winterizing as well and so maybe I just have them do the hull repair and leave the ordering of the lower case until next April or May when I can get the boat out again.

That sounds like a good plan.

I agree with JoLin Get hull fixed now and if they will hold off till april get lower unit then. When you can actually try it out.

Good Luck !!!
