Re: lower end

Make sure the water pick-up tube is aligned and possibly turn the flywheel by hand to allow the drive-shaft to slip into place. Also put a little grease on the splines of the drive-shaft. Not so much for installation, but for the next time you want to remove it.

What Winged wheel posted. plus a third hand is always handy to turn the flywheel.

Re: lower end

The shift shaft may be the problem. Shift to forward, then turn the shift shaft on the lower unit clockwise. See if that helps. You may have to wiggle the shifter.

Re: lower end

make sure the exhaust pipe is inline, and the water tube is moved to insert position also make sure your shift shaft is in nuetral and the shifter is in neural. If you removed the cam on the shifter shaft make sure it is in the right position. the cam locks the engine down in reverse so the engine dosn,t rise in revers. if this is not correct the push pin will destroy the cam and you will have to replace it. also make sure you exhaust pipe gasket is right side up this will not only destroy the gasket it will definitely hinder the lower unit from going back up
