I have a 1989 200hp Yamaha, the gear case has a crack around the bearing carrier. Can I trust it will not grenade while off shore? I know gear cases for the 150 through 200 hp are the same, but not sure what years are interchangable. Will a 1999 gear case fit? My search has come up empty,so now I need help from the "Masters" Thanks for your help Rich

Re: Lower gear cases

i would not trust it, it could leak out the gear case oil.
Gears with no lube make a nasty sound and
cost a lot of money.
i know cuz it happened to me.
i would drain the lower unit, drop it, and take
it into a shop where it can be welded.
if they cannot do that, check E-bay for a lower unit.

Good luck

Re: Lower gear cases

drill a hole at the end of the crack to prevent further cracking and weld it, then go play.
its common, mercs do it as well. its caused by corrosion. thats why its reccomended to pull the carrier every few years.
I think the entire case is interchangable with a 99 unit but you will have to use the 99 pump parts. but as corrosion builds at the aft end of the case where the carrier nut, lockring and carrier all meet the housing the stuff will split the housing just like freezing ice.

Re: Lower gear cases

Any 2.6 lite gear case will interchange. Most will have the same gear ratio as the 200.
