Lower gear fluid the color of mud?

Seems like I have seen this before. Thinking it may be very common. I tossed it in a fire half expecting it to help douse the flame. No....the fire loved it. Great....much more oil than water. at least.

Now where does a Merc 650 pee? You know what I mean. Had the bottom in a deformed oil barrel and couldn't find any water exodus. Engine never got warm before I shut it down as a precaution.

You have a bad seal in your lower and that is water mixing with gear oil.

That is bad

True of course. Thinking that I have seen this five of the six times I have changed lower gear fluid in six different motors. One fairly new. Can fishing like cut the seal? Fishing line is everywhere it seems. I have cut my way out of it twice while diving.

My newish 4hp 4 stroke? I need my impact driver to remove the lower gear screws. Geesh.

yes, fishing line will shred the seal in about 2 seconds
