I have a 1983 Johnson 9.9, Model J10SELCTC, thats been sitting in storage for 15 years, and hasnt been serviced in over 20. I recently got it to run in a test tank and noticed that the water pump wasnt working. upon removing the bottom half i was greeted by an impeller with no dowel, and being 2 hours from my house had to improvise some sort of replacment that ended up working. but the gear linckage, that connects the gear stick thingy, was incredibly hard to reconnect. everytime i managed to kind of slip it into the hole, it would shift into the incorrect gear when i screwed the bottom half back on. it ended up breaking in like 3 spots as it is old brass. i ended up half assing it and kind of getting it to work. It shifted into all three posistions more or less fine. i then started using the motor, put maybe an hour on it, and then my half assed shifting linckage failed. i pulled the boat up onto the beach, took the lower half off, and a lot of water poured out of the lower half. ****. took it to my workshop, put it in the vise, drained the gearcase lube to make sure it wasnt milky. luckily it wasnt, but it was matte black, and smelled terrible. thinking i must have forgotten an o ring somewhere in the water pump, i took it apart again, and when i pulled the drive shaft out, found oil residue that WAS milky. granted it wasnt alot but im still nervous. im thinking that these 20 yr old seals and gaskets have failed, and ive been looking to see what i need to order to replace them, but it just seems like such a daunting task. Hoping someone a little older and wiser can give me a few tips. Im 15 by the way

Ok thanks, I just wasnt sure. I was thinking of ordering a water pump repair kit and seal kits for the lower half

Update, I got the shift rod connecter to cooperate and now it works great, Im going to put a few hours on it and then take the bottom half off again and see if any water has been leaking from the pump

Well, the gearcase is sealed but the rest of the space down there is full of a nice water/gas/carbon mix. Check the powerhead to make sure it's not overheating. If not, you are good to go.

The power head is fine, I know there is a thermometer or something in the motor to moniter temperatures, but im not sure how it works. there is a nice steady stream of water coming from the water output hole thing. It feels warm but not hot and it feels cool once i give the motor some gas.

Yes there should be a thermostat to control water temperature.-----The water that comes out the " output hole thing " does NOT circulate through the block and it strays relatively cool.

Ok so the water that circulates through the head, where does it exit? And is there supposed to be a bit of mist coming from the exhaust relief hole when at low speeds?

Most cooling water is dumped into the exhaust flow to cool the exhaust.----It then goes out the prop.------The tell tale water is only a bit of water to let you know that the pump is at least working.----It is NOT an indication that motor is cooling properly !!

Ok, so how do I know if the head is over heating or not? I mean after some long trips with it, the motor cover feels warm, but not too warm, so I just assume it’s fine

Your thermostat will be found behind the head cover right at the bottom. It's a real pain to get at. With the motor up to running temp. you should be able to hold your hand on the top of the head for a three count. If you have an infrared temp. tester it should read about 140 F. At idle it it never seems to get very hot.

There is a small drain hole in the lower unit that is meant to be a drain. Make sure it is clear.

I checked the temps and everything is running fine, i was also thinking of converting it into a 15 hp, with a bigger carb, exhaust manifold etc. any thoughts?
