We are getting an Evinrude Lark X 40hp model 40872c up and running. It starts and runs good but if you shift into reverse, it stalls the engine. Does anyone have the shop manual for this lower leg section? We believe it's a 68.
What work has been done on the motor?-----Find the 2 wires that go to the lower unit and rmove the wee rubber boots back and seperate the connecter.-----Check ohm reading from wire to the lower unit and ground.--Report the values you get.
The magnets and control unit function normally. It will shift from forward to neutral and then to reverse. The problem is that the reverse gear assembly is binding against the thrust washer. There simply isn't enough room left once the thrust washer is installed and the end cap is tightened down.
