Lower oil change?

Hey guys, I just bought this boat a month or so ago with hopes of taking it out a couple more times before I HAVE to winterize it. I have yet to buy a repair manual ( on my list to do) but I have searched vastly on here have yet to find similar thread to my motor. I have a 1990 Force 50 hp model number 507X90D. I read on forces of a small allen head bolt for the drain etc... mine has nothing of the sort. The bolt at the lowest point says fill and the top says vent. I would assume the lower bolt is the drain and the top is to allow the flow to drain quicker, but fill from where and how much. I was expecting more along the lines of a rear diff on a truck as in drain and fill where you fill it to where it begins to seep out. any help much appreciated.

Re: Lower oil change?

The fact that there appears to be oil seeping out of that lower hole is concerning. If it lets oil out it can let water in. You fill from the bottom hole. All the top hole is for is to vent the air out of the lower unit as you fill from the bottom. Fill from the bottom until the oil comes out the top hole then pump a few more times to get all the bubbles out.

The bigger motors 85/90 and 120/125 have the allen head drain. You don't.
There is a screw on the front of the drive, don't touch!!! It holds the linkage in place.
Drain and fill from the bottom.
Looks like someone's beat that drive up.You can recondition the prop for a few dollars. They'r made to push water not dirt:) Everybody's found the bottom!!! J

Thanks guys. Just wasn't sure about filling it from the bottom common sense told me if I drained it from there wouldn't it redrain as fast as I could fill it. But alas I was wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to find how easy it was to fill from the bottom hole. Thanks again guys.

Yeah, isn't that crazy. It sounds like a mess waiting to happen but in reality it's pretty easy and you can see the importance of doing it that way. You keep the air bubbles out and when it comes out the hole, you know it's full of fluid, not air.
