Hi..have an 87 evenrude v4 90hp motor ...has slow drip at prop. from gear oil...can the seals behind the prop be removed from the outside and new ones pressed in...or does the lower unit need to be torn apart and seals changed from inside...thanks for any help...Peter

First! make sure the oil drip is gear oil, not unburned oil, and gas. If it truly is gear oil, you can do this. Remove the prop, along with the spacer at the rear of the prop. Looking down inside the exhaust hub, or prop shaft bearing carrier, You will see four bolts. Remove these! If the engine has not been run in salt water, or it's your lucky day, you can pull the carrier out of the gear case with a slide hammer with a hook on the end, or otherwise a gear puller with 5/16-18 bolt's about 6" long. When removed, the prop shaft seals can carefully be pried out, and then replaced with a socket of the proper size to act as a driver. Replace Carrier O-Ring, plus the O-Rings under the head of the carrier retainer bolts. Seal with OMC gasket seal. You will need two headless guide bolts threaded 1/4"-28 to act as guides to align the carrier bolts with the retaining ring, make these threaded rod's about 8" long. When you have the carrier aligned on the guide bolts, carefully drive down to it's seat with a plastic mallet.

Re: lower oil seal

R.Johnson thanks, I have the shop manual and can see the parts and proceedure you are referring to.It is def. gear oil. I guess My big question was if the seals had to be replaced from the rear of the bearing carrier or from the front without removing the carrier, they did not mention the o-rings under the carrier bolts though...thanks for the info...got a good place to order parts online...thanks again...Peter

hello
OMC made a tool to change the seals without removing the carrier. ask your local dealer. with the tool the job takes 30 min unless the prop is frozen to the shaft.
good luck and keep posting

rodbolt..are you saying that the seals are pressed in from the prop side...if so and the o rings are not leaking...does it matter how I remove the seals as long as I dont damage the mating surfaces beteen seals and carrier...there by being able to press in new seals without removing entire bearing carrier???thanks...peter

Yes.With a little patience and care not to mar the carrier or propshaft surfaces ,either the special tool or some mechanic scribes and imagination ,they can be removed without pulling the carrier.
