So my new used boat has bad bellows and needs its shift cable replaced at the moment I am trying to figure out how to get the out drive off while the boat is in neutral its a 1969 mark twain v16 120 Merc model 1. I was told you can damage the drive if its not in forward and the cable that controls it is froze solid any thoughts.

Re: Lower/out drive shift cable froze

cut the shift cable between the end of the shift bellow and the gimbal, turn straight with screwdriver, remove drive.
If thats the part thats frozen, remove lower unit , then remove upper unit.

That's the spot to cut the cable...

Look at Ziggy's photo of the shift shaft.

That is what you want to turn with the screwdriver so it is straight the prop should be able to lock CCW (while looking at the bow)... if so your drive is in forward and ready to remove.
