Boy do I hope someone out there can help. Unfortunately I hit a rock this past weekend and dented and cracked the cone on my lower unit. I need some advice on what to do here are my current options:

1-pay $650 + labor to have the housing replaced with a new part
2-try to get the lower unit off, pounded out and welded ( can I do this myself?)
3-try and find a old housing (I have had zero luck on finding used housing except for Fairwinds Marine which has a full lower unit –water pump for $400)
4-If I can find a used housing, buy a repair manual and do-it-myself.

I just have no idea where to begin. Has anyone had luck with refurbished lower units from companies like Fairwind’s and are there other alternatives?

If I chose to try and take off the unit and repair it (either with a refurbished housing, or but getting it welded) how much work am I in for, or should I just take it to the shop?

PLEASE help!

Re: Lower Unit 2001 Johnson 15 hp short shaft HELP NEEDED

I rebuilt my own lower unit (V-6 Merc) and it was easy. I did have to get the spanner nut taken off by a shop as it takes a special tool. I bought an aftermarket gear set, had the bearings cross referenced at a bearing house, and replaced every seal in it for under $300. Saved about $450 from a used unit and about a thousand over a refurbished unit. I see smaller HP units on ebay all the time going for 1 to 3 hundred usd. Housings are even cheaper, I have seen them going in the $20 range. I have put a pinon gear in a 25 OMC but it was several years ago, best or my recollection it was pretty easy as well. If the housing is just cracked I would take it to a welder first thing and see if they can fix it without disassembly. If that is not an option I would check ebay for a used unit or a used housing and put your gears and shafts in it.

It looks like it is too old and is not a match.
