Hello,
i have recently Bought a 1982 19" aquasport with a 175hp v6 Johnson this boat has been well taken care of. In exception that the boat has sat in storage for a long time 10+ yrs.
my troubles are that the shift is stuck in neutral and wont enter forward or reverse. when inspecting the lower unit "removed from the engine" the inner B.C housing will not come out of the lower unit housing. and yes i have removed the 4 bolts from inside the exhaust behind the prop. any clues on how to remove it??

--------------------
Gary D. Sometimes those bearing carriers are stuck pretty good.If you don't have the proper puller you can rig up a slide hammer that hooks onto the cage supports.Worst case scenario ,you may have to apply some external heat with a propane torch and heat evenly before trying again.

Not to insult your skills at all but how did you determine that the lower unit wouldn't shift?Did you spin the prop or have engine running while attempting?

none taken ob
with the selector cable disconected from the engine, and the lower unit removed, the gear selector rod on the lower unit will not move up or down for forward or reverce.
this is why i am in need for suggestions on removing the B.C. housing that seems to be stuck/froze in the lower unit housing.

It just comes straight out. What are you trying to remove it with?Try soaking the fit with a liberal amount of pentetrating oil and let sit for a spell.Heat may be your last option.Reeks havoc on the paint work but,oh well.

ob, thanks for the help
i have made a slide hammer tool to fit over the prop shaft to try and remove the B.C.housing with the gears assy all together. meaning that i am trying to pull the propshaft hoping the gear assy will come out with the B.C. housing, all in one piece(is this the wrong way? can anything get damaged?)i mean the bearing cage is really stuck good, i even heated the outer lower unit housing like you suggested(at the two locations that the o-ring seal's sit in the lower unit) and no luck yet  . since late last night. i have lubed it really good to try once again tomorrow.
"frustration setting in"

i know the fishing at the land cut in corpus christi is just waiting for me and my 12 yr old son after a few trips there if the day is calm enough in the gulf it would be my son's first experiance. knowing how much he loves to fish it would be something he wouldn't ever forget.

The carrier will come out separate from the propshaft. It should slide out leaving the propshaft in place. In short, you don't want to slide hammer on the propshaft as it will surely cause damage. If you can get a two or three way long jaw puller and position the jaws on the inside edge of the bearing carrier ,you can use the center of the propshaft to seat the puller screw shaft on.Try to rig a slide hammer that just pulls from the carrier supports. The pulling force needs to be evenly distributed so as not to pull more on one half of the carrier.Good luck and keep us posted on your results.

Haven't been down to the landcut in a few years.Last few days here has been a major wind blowout.I like it to be as flat as possible crossing Baffin bay to the landcut from Laguna Madre.Bucking a stiff south wind gets hard on the old bones in a 15 ft Whaler.Long run but good fishing.

Glad I could be of some help Gary. Can't help you with the diagram of the lower unit ,but I'll bet that a local dealer in your area would print a parts exploded view out for you ,especially if you obtain any necessary parts you'll need to finish the job.Otherwise you can get yourself a factory engine specific manual that will be invaluable for future reference. Here's one place you can get one online if not from your local dealer. You can also get a general info manual by clicking on the repair manuals at the bottom of this page.

web page
