Lower unit bolts stuck

I recently sucked a roller bearing into my mid piston on my '74 70hp jhsn. I just got a '73 65hp jhsn. the top runs good. Compression is 125,124,125 but I am a little conserned about the lower unit, water comes out the prop exhaust and i don't think i am getting enough water circulation with the flush attachment as i did on my '74 70hp. I want to swap the lower unit from the '74 70hp. but the 5/8 bolt and the 1/2" bolt on the trim tab won't turn on the '73 65hp. how can i get them off? so far I only used hand tool, should i try an air gun on it or will they snap?

Water is supposed to flow out thru the propeller. Use a hand held propane torch (nothing hotter than that) to heat the aluminum on both sides of that bolt while applying pressure to remove it.

take your time and be patient. propane worked for mine, except for the ones when I was impatient. drilling and retapping the broken bolt was a nightmare..

Nothing works like an impact wrench on loosening a stuck bolt/nut. Just don't put it on high impact.....impact according to size of fastner.

Additionally, a thorough pre soak with a premium penetrating oil (Kroil for one...or Deep Ceep) will also help.

Fire works too, but you bake your paint. And if you put penetrating oil all over the thing before you cook it, you are in for a fire.....and then there is the problem of damage to other parts....doesn't seem to be an issue here due to the location of the problem....nothing else back there.

But, I have used fire before also, when all else fails, as a last resort......repairing 50 year old ag equipment.

Mark

Thanks for the advise wth the propane guys... It seems I don't have to worry about it. I learn something new every day. I dropped it in the water today and everything ran fine.. perhaps I was just being too cautious.. it really ran better than my 70hp
