lower unit compatability

I have an 1987-88 Evinrude 48SPL, does anyone know if the lower unit will interchange over onto a 1989-1992 Johnson 50 HP,I know there is quite a few things that is different on these 2, sorry I don't have the model number for the 50, I know the part number for the gear cases are different, but sometimes, it doesn't mean anything, and the lower off of the 50 is not available to compare. I thought maybe someone had done a swap on these 2

89 and newer do not fit on an 88 model

Thanks Racerone, was hoping it would, I was trying to get a Tilt and Trim unit cheap. but since it wont work, I am back to square one, LOL
