Engine is a 1988 Evinrude 50HP Model# E50TLCCS...l/u was knocking

so i have the lower unit pretty much torn apart, but i am stuck with the main drive shaft and prop shaft. I have the nut off at the pinion gear, but cannot get the drive shaft to slide out. Is there something that i am missing here. my pinion and forward gears are blown and need to replace them. my manual isnt very much help as it is a generic evinrude book that covers all models. what i see from the top is the bearings under the cover, and from the proop side i can see pinion, forward gear and clutch dog, with the pinion nut off shouldnt the D/S just slide out at this point....please help me out i need this back together for the weekend.

thanx guys

i appreciate it

Re: Lower Unit Disassembly

Now you can see why no one here recommends thirty party manuals ... they make good beer coasters or knee pads.

Check the BRP Evinrude website for the complete parts breaddown

Re: Lower Unit Disassembly

Put the pinion nut back on for a couple of threads, stick a large flat blade screw driver between the pinion nut and the shift dog and give the prop shaft a good wrap in the up position. This should break the shaft loose from the pinion gear.

How do you get to the pinion nut without first removing the Prop shaft??

Re: Lower Unit Disassembly

As said in post # 1 he had the pinion nut off. A good long wrench does it just to loosen it. By the way, read the rules at the top of the forum and start a new one. This thread is over two yrs old.
