Re: lower unit gear lube

Howdy,

This is an OMC Cobra?

It has 3 openings.

The bottom one is the drain. [DO NOT FILL IT FROM THE BOTTOM]

The middle one is the "fill" port.

The top one is where the dipstick goes.

According to your OMC manual you should fill it only from the "fill" (middle) port.

Fill it until it shows full on the dipstick with the dipstick resting on the hole (this allows a slight over-fill)
THEN run the drive, and do subsequent level checks with the dipstick SCREWED ALL THE WAY IN.

Any trapped sir will then reduce the level so check it frequently.

You can use most any good grade GL-5 gear lube.

I like Mercury HP gear lube (synthetic) Others like Volvo Mobil1, or Amsoil synthetic gear lube etc.

The Mercury stuff is available from West Marine, Boaters World (until about June....then they're closing for good!) and a lot of Walmarts (which probably has the best price)

Cheers,

Be sure to replace the plastic O-ring gaskets on the plugs.
About 50 cents each at any Evinrude-Johnson dealer...They should be replaced every time the plugs are removed.
That drive should hold at least 1 1/2 quarts of lube. I know the 4.3 Cobra holds 64 ounces exactly but the 2.3 may be slightly less.
Fill it slow,
You can get the lube pump for about 8 bucks at Walmart in the boat section...

Walmart will only have the Premium, not the synthetic High Performance Mercruiser stuff.
