I changed my gear oil yesterday when I changed it there was no water or metal in it ,but on my Yamaha 115 the fill level mark is above the check screw. and when I put oil in it started seeping out around the prop and out of the tiny hole in the side of the gear case can some one help me with an explanation? If you could that would be great.

Re: Lower Unit Gear oil question

What year motor is your 115? You should be putting the oil in the bottom(drain screw) and having it come out the fill level screw....

Re: Lower Unit Gear oil question

The explanation given to me (when the same thing happened) was that the lower unit seals are configured to keep water from entering, but will allow excess gear oil to escape. When that happens, it will leak out of the lower unit exactly as you described. You apparently overfilled the lower unit gearcase, but no harm was done. At least, that explanation allowed me to sleep at night after I did it.
