In my previous post I wrote: I have an 81 35 hp johnson with a bad dog clutch and gears. I also have good parts from a 93' lower unit. I want to install the good parts in the old unit. Aside from some minor design changes the only major difference I see is that the newer unit has a longer pinion gear. Can I use my old one with the new gears?? Any experience with this would be appreciated.

Even if I am way off base with this let me know any reply would be helpful.

Dave

Hi dirtman
I'm not here to tell you what you can or can't do. I will say that this is not an advisable thing to do. These gears are suposed to be run and replaced as a set. You might get away with replaceing parts that are the same. The trouble is you could end up blowing up your powerhead trying to save a buck repairing your L/U. You may damage your gear housing. Do you really want a cobbled together outboard? What about depenablity? What about safety?
