Working on a Merc 400 40hp with remote. Manual describes how to remove the "Gear Housing Cover" using this special tool. Is there some other way of removing this threaded segmented locking ring from the Gear Housing? One mechanic I talked to said to heat with a propane torch and give it a good rap with an offset brass punch. So far I have identified that the water pump is toast and the primary pinion gear sound like it has a broken tooth in it. Need to open up the gear case and take a look at the bearings and the gears.<br />Any help will be appreciated. <br />Roger2
