Has anybody got any tips on how to reattach the lower unit on '79 115 Merc? I've replaced the impeller and can't seem to fit the whole lower unit back together. I've alligned the water pipe and the shift rod (which is in forward gear - same as lower)but seem to be getting caught on something everytime. I've turned the flywheel and the prop turns but it still won't close up. There's a gap of about 3 inches. It's frustrating the hell out of me. Please help. Thanks

that should do it. just make sure the water tube is in going in it's hole, the shift shaft splines are lined up and the drive shaft splines are lined up and don't put grease on the top of the drive shaft as the grease will have nowhere to go when it's tightened.

Not shore on your year engine, but you should have a Oring on the top of the drive shaft at the spline was it their when you removed it ? If not it my still be inside of the crank which will make it impossible to get lower unit all the way up.

Hope this helps

I had the very same thing happen on my 79 140. There should have been a plastic tube about 3-4" long with the impeller kit. this tube fits over the waterpump housing where the water pipe inserts. This tube helps to make sure that the pipe is lined up correctly. I learned the hard way. I didn't use the tube and I couldn't get the lower unit on any further than you are. I thought it was because of my shoulder problems so I took it to a mechanic and he had an extra tube, slid it on the pump and then slid the lower unit right on, very little effort.

I hope this helps.

Craig
