Lower unit interchange

Hello everyone. this is for a friend of mine. He has a 1984 150 Black Max and needs a lower unit. What will interchange on this model? thanks Lee

Almost anything (right driveshaft length of course) from a 2.0, 2.4, or 2.5 L V6 engine. Everything from a 4 inch 1.78:1 LU off an XR4, to 4.5 inch 1.87:1 standard LU. Most of the sporty stuff will bolt right on.

Earlier ones had a spring load preload pin on the end of the driveshaft. Later ones without the pin are better. My mechanic has had pretty good luck with the aftermarket LUs available.

A correct unit will be a 2:1 ratio but you can use a 1:87 but may have to do some propping changes.....
