lower unit interchangeable?

I have the option of getting a 1977 v4 115hp Evinrude complete minus the lower unit. I have a complete 1979 v4 115 with a blown ring. Will the lower unit from the 1979 work on the 1977?

If it does fit am I taking a big step back going with the 1977 motor?

No The gearcase will have to come from 85 or 115 1973-1977 or 135HP from 1973-1976.
