So, on my 1986 CC with a 260hp alpha one....
I go to the lake and the boat won't start. So I take it home thinking it has hydro lock, and I remove all the plugs, and no water! So that's good. Take off the belts and accessories, nothing seized, but I can't turn the motor at all!

So, off comes the out drive, and the motor moves, so I am happy that the motor is still good. I turn the drive shaft on the out drive, and it is stuck, so i try spinning it the other way, and sure enough, it moves. I then turn it again, and it seem fine. I decide to look a bit deeper, and the separate the lower unit from the upper, and sure enough, the lower unit is hard to turn and locks up.
I assume it is gears, so I don't know how to take apart the lower unit, or should I be looking for another one or a new one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I had a big boating weekend plan this weekend...............

Ayuh,... When you drained the oil, was it full of Crap, 'n silvery lookin',..??

If the lower gears are Gone,...
The Upper will need atleast a rebuild/ reseal to remove the Crap that migrated up there...

Fer the Money yer talkin' for Labor alone,....
I'd just break out the checkbook, 'n buy a Brand New SEI... iboat's is got 'em Right here...

You might have gotten it before it did a lot of damage.
You need a special tool to remove the retaining nut on the lower bearing carrier.
Take it to the local dealer and see if they will do it for you.
Some shadetrees might have this tool(I do).Maybe you can find someone to help.J

Just for giggles, are turning the shaft CCW? If you turn opposite the water pump direction it will bind/lock on that direction. Just make sure you remove the water pump impellar and try it before you whip out the credit card.

Took it to a dealer and they found the bottom gears chipped up after he opened it up, claimed that I can use my insurance policy to get a replacement, since I hit a rock, and that might of caused the damage. He loaned me a used unit to get me through the weekend, and now I am off to Tahoe for the weekend.

I guess I will see what happens when I get home!
Enjoy,
