Hey guys,

I have a 96' Yamaha 115 2 stroke outboard. Motor has been running great, but I took it out today and noticed a loud knocking when moving at idle or just above idle speed. I ran the engine on the hose and heard the noise again and it was for sure coming from the lower unit, and not the motor. The engine still ran and shifted perfectly. Any ideas what this could be? Does it sound like an $$ issue?

I guess the two things you could check would be the lower unit oil and the prop. Might be you've lost the retainer for one of the lower gears. Really hard to tell as noise will travel from one part of the engine to another quite easily. With the engine OFF put it in gear and try to turn the prop by hand. Go in both directions. If a gear set is slipping you might be able to feel it throught the prop.

Check your lower unit lube. If there is a lot of metal in it you have likely damaged the gears.
