Lower Unit Leak

I just recently bought my first boat. The boat has a 1990 Force 90HP Outboard on it. Shortly after I bought the boat, I checked the lower unit fluid and noticed it was milky in color like water had gotten in the fluid. The previous owner had just recently had the lower unit rebuilt, so after telling him about the milky color, he graciously suggested that he take the boat back to where it was serviced and have them take a look. After some prodding, they agreed to fix the lower unit for free....they supposedly replaced the seals in the lower unit.

Since then, I've had the boat out twice and both times it ran great. Yesterday was the second time that I had it out. After getting it back to the house, I noticed that it had leaked about 2 tablespoons of lower unit fluid onto the ground. After leaking out that little bit, it stopped leaking and hasn't leaked since. The leak seemed to be coming from some small holes near the lower unit fluid fill hole.

Anyway, sorry for the long message, but is this normal? Could it just be that when they worked on the motor that they just overfilled the lower unit fluid and it just leaked out the excess? I'm not that worried about it since the leak stopped, but I thought I'd ask all of the experts on this site. Can anyone tell me if this is something I need to worry about?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Lower Unit Leak

Hey Yooper,

Just to clarify, my fluid is no longer milky, I think the new seals corrected that. My issue now is limited to the fact that I had that little bit of fluid leak out.

Sounds like we have a very similar question. But if yours is milky, you may have a different problem that I do. Milky fluid (from everything I've seen/heard) means that there is water in the fluid.

Anyway, hopefully someone can help us. Good Luck!!!
